Beverly Heritage Center presents 3 new exhibits

Three new exhibits will be on view at the Beverly Heritage Center, starting at the Heart of a Heritage event the evening of Feb. 16. These local history-based exhibits will run until May, with other rotating exhibits to follow.

Beverly Heritage Center is starting the 2013 season with a bang, opening three rotating exhibits on local history. One exhibit focuses specifically on Laura Jackson Arnold, sister to Civil War General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Laura Jackson Arnold lived in Beverly and nursed soldiers during the Civil War. The exhibit will tell her story and connect with a wide variety of social issues of the time.

“Laura Arnold was an unusual woman for her time, who spoke her own mind even when her family did not agree,” said Alison Thornton, AFHA AmeriCorps member with Beverly Heritage Center. “As one of the most compelling characters from Beverly, we are excited to offer an exhibit about her life and times.” Thornton will be helping develop exhibits and event programming in Beverly throughout the year.

The second exhibit features “Images” local to Beverly and throughout West Virginia. These photographs, prints, and paintings each tell a story unto itself. The historic photos are fascinating and show the visitor the characters within them.

The third rotating exhibit is a collection of Valentine’s Day cards from throughout the years, some lovingly signed and dated.

The Heart of a Heritage dinner event and exhibit opening will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. Tickets for the event are $45 single or $85 couple, and reservations are requested.

The exhibits can also be seen following the event, opening during Beverly Heritage Center winter hours, Thursdays through Mondays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Beverly Heritage Center is located at the corner of Route 219 and Files Creek Road in Beverly, six miles south of Elkins.
