Symphony Orchestra announces schedule

The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2013-2014 season with the theme Discover Your Symphony, celebrating 75 years as West Virginia’s symphony.

The Capitol Conference Center Symphonic Series will feature master works such as Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” and Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” fantastic guest artists like Vince Dimartino and Rex Richardson performing Paulus’ “Concerto for Two Trumpets and Orchestra” and “Valentina Lisitsa” tackling “Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1.”

The ZMM Pops Series will showcase two of Broadway’s leading ladies with “Wicked Divas,” movie magic with the music of John Williams, a tribute to one of the greatest rock bands of all time with “Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Show” and our seasonal family favorite “Home for the Holidays.”

Guest artists and soloists for the 2013-2014 Season Include: Korbinian Altenberger, violin; Lola Astanova, piano; Janet Brown, soprano, Gerald Gray, tenor, and Paul Krieder, baritone; Vince DiMartino, trumpet and Rex Richardson, trumpet; Valentina Lisitsa, piano; and Jolyon Pegis, cello and Maria Schleuning, violin. Guest groups include Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Show and the Wicked Divas.

Discover Your Symphony unites the community, region and state to explore the incredible world of symphonic music. The WVSO is one of West Virginia’s premiere cultural institutions that delights audiences and provides invaluable music education opportunities to children and musicians across the state.

The Capitol Conference Center Symphonic Series kicks off Sept. 20 & 21, 2013 with cellist Jolyon Pegis and violinist Maria Schleuning performing Rozsa’s Sinfonia Concertante, for violin, cello and orchestra, Op. 29. Additional pieces presented by WVSO include Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The Oct. 18 and 19 concerts celebrate West Virginia’s sesquicentennial with Debussy’s Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun, Paulus’ Concerto for Two Trumpets & Orchestra featuring Vince DiMartino and Rex Richardson both on trumpet, Cooper’s Appalachian Autumn, and Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

On Nov. 15 and 16, WVSO presents Barber’s The School of Scandal, Overture, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and guest pianist Lola Astanova performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 18. On Jan. 24 and 25, the WVSO presents Sibelius’ Symphony No. 1 and guest pianist Valentina Lisitsa performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 15.

On Feb. 28 and March 1, 2014, WVSO presents The Mary Price Ratrie Legacy Concert with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (Eroica) and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto featuring guest violinist Korbinian Altenberger of Astral Artists. The series closes on May 2 and 3, 2014, with Orff’s Carmina Burana with Janet Brown, soprano, Gerald Gray, tenor, Paul Kreider, baritone, the West Virginia Symphony Chorus and the West Virginia University Chorus. The concert also features Jackfert’s On the Shores of Qingdao and Modarelli’s River Saga. Each concert includes “Preludes,” a pre-concert discussion with Maestro Grant Cooper beginning at 7 p.m. “Preludes” is free to all concert-goers.

The ZMM Architects & Engineers Pops Series is sure to delight and entertain audiences with another season of great guest artists and performances. The series opens with the WVSO’s annual tradition, Home for the Holidays on Dec. 6 and 7.

Feb. 7 and 8 features Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Show with the orchestra. This show is hailed as one of the most authentic cast and production shows honoring the Rolling Stones. This concert showcases hits such as Sympathy for the Devil, Paint it Black, and Satisfaction. On March 14 and 15, 2014, WVSO brings audiences The John Williams Experience honoring the world’s greatest movie composer with music from “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones” and “E.T.” The series closes on April 11 &and 12, 2014, with Wicked Divas bringing the best of Broadway to Charleston with selections from Wicked, Gypsy, Ragtime, Titanic, and opera selections from George Bizet’s Carmen.

The City National Bank Family Discovery Series continues this season with performances that are perfect for the whole family. The series begins with “Happy Birthday West Virginia!” on Oct. 19.

March 15, 2014, brings “A Celebration of Yourself” with special guest Slim Goodbody. The Series closes with “The Music of Harry Potter” on April 12, 2014.

The 2013-2014 Montclaire String Quartet Series returns to the University of Charleston’s beautiful Erma Byrd Gallery for a third year. Performances for the season are: “Vienna Nights” on Oct. 6; “Miniatures Revisited” on Nov. 24; “New England Patriots” on Feb. 2, 2014, and “Lucky Seven” on March 23, 2014. All MSQ performances are on Sundays at 3 p.m.

The WVSO and The Charleston Ballet Co. will present The Nutcracker at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14. This annual partnership is a WVSO audience favorite for all ages.
