D&E honors Khan with teaching award

Dr. Nadeem Khan, Davis & Elkins College professor of economics and finance, was honored during the college’s annual Academic Awards and Recognition Convocation ceremony with the 2013 Lois Latham Award for Teaching Excellence.

The award is presented annually to an outstanding D&E educator who is characterized by a distinguished intellectual career; enthusiasm for scholarship and intellectual curiosity; and, most importantly, by evidence that it is his or her professional calling to nurture the intellectual and personal growth of others. Nominations for the award are submitted by faculty, staff and students.

“I am honored and ecstatic to receive the Lois Latham Award,” Khan said. “In a teaching institution ‘teaching excellence award’ is a singular recognition because this means acknowledgment by your students who nominate you and affirmation by your peers as well.”

Khan has been a member of the D&E faculty for the past 17 years. In 1999, he was voted Teacher of the Year by members of the D&E International Student Organization. His teaching and research interests include international economics, microeconomics and finance.

Khan earned his PhD from Iowa State University and his master’s degree in applied economics from San Jose State University. He has also taught at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He is a member of the American Economic Association.

Davis & Elkins College offers baccalaureate programs in economics and in finance. Study in economics includes a broad range of classes committed to presenting a view of the world’s major economic systems with a special emphasis on the organization and operation of market economics. Students majoring in finance study a broad range of issues dealing with business finance, investments and macroeconomics. Both disciplines are included in the Department of Business and Entrepreneurship, which offers a curriculum that gives students a balanced education consisting of both liberal arts and professional courses through its several areas of concentration.
