IWLA to host youth rifle event

The Mountaineer Chapter of Izaak Walton League of America will host a youth air rifle shooting event on Sunday, approximately 6 miles up Files Creek Road in Beverly.

This free event is open to children ages 8 to 17. It will start at 1 p.m., with registration at 12:30 p.m.

Registered participants will be eligible for prize drawings at the end of the day.

Before the event, a shooting and range safety class will be given by Ray Mearns, a Mountaineer Chapter member and retired Division of Natural Resources conservation officer.

The committee of Mountaineer Chapter members Jay Winn, Don Thomason and Bruce Evans organized this event to encourage youth to get off the couch or phone and learn more on the outdoor activities available to them. Many other Mountaineer Chapter members also volunteer to help with the learning stations.

This event is made possible by grants from the National Rifle Association, Endowment Board of IWLA and the Mountaineer Chapter.

The fall Youth Air Shooting Event is scheduled for Sept. 15 at the same location and time.

Additional information is available by contacing President Bruce Evans at 304-636-0916.
