Local students win VFW essay contest
Pickens School students Hannah Parsons and Alexis Chandler recently placed fourth at the state level for the Veterans of Foreign Wars “Patriot’s Pen” essay contest and the VFW’s “Voice of Democracy” contest.
Parsons, a sixth-grader at Pickens School, won first place in the district for grades six to eight for the VFW’s “Patriot’s Pen” essay contest, which allowed her to advance to the state level. There, she won fourth place. This year’s title was “What Would I Tell the Founding Fathers.” She is the daughter of Jonn and Beki Parsons of Helvetia.
Chandler, a junior at Pickens School, won first in the district for grades nine to 12 for the VFW’s “Voice of Democracy” contest. The title this year was “Is the Constitution Still Relevant Today?”
Parsons advanced to the state level, where she placed fourth. She is the daughter of Kim Dulaney and Chuck Chandler, both of Pickens.
The two girls were honored at a reception for statewide winners at the Days Inn in Flatwoods and were presented with a check for $25 from the Elkins VFW.
