Bagel Bites Deli slated to open in Elkins

A taste of New York will be coming to Elkins with the opening of Bagel Bites on Sept. 20. The deli style restaurant will be located on Third Street in the heart of downtown.

There will be free WiFi and five large screen televisions tuned to a variety of sports channels. The building at 121 Third St. is currently being refurbished from top to bottom.

“We’re restoring the brick and the tin ceiling for an industrial old Elkins theme,” said Joseph Dykeman.

In an effort to get that true New York bagel taste, the dough is from New York City. However, the bagels will be proofed and baked here.

“The water is an issue. It’s hard water here,” Dykeman said. In contrast, New York City tap water, which comes from large upstate reservoirs, some more than 125 miles away in the Catskill Mountains, is soft. The water is a key component of that hard-to-duplicate New York flavor.

“We will offer New Jersey service. No one will be standing for more than 30 seconds without being greeted,” Dykeman, a New Jersey native, said. Another New York and New Jersey specialty, Boar’s Head deli meats and cheeses will be used for sandwiches.

The deli menu will feature big Mountaineer breakfast and lunch sandwiches, and an inexpensive dinner selection, according to Dykeman.

Thor Zabajai, a Davis & Elkins College student, is a Bagel Bites business partner. As a result, discount vouchers will be offered to D&E students.

“Kids can come here and have coffee and bagels,” Dykeman said. “We’ll have two tables outside too.”

Dykeman first discovered West Virginia and Elkins while working as a contractor at a local prison, met his girlfriend and put his New Jersey house up for sale.

“I really like it here in Elkins,” Dykeman said.
