WVWC School of Education to offer online class

This fall semester, the School of Education at West Virginia Wesleyan College will be offering a three-hour online class: SPEC 560 Autism: Learning Characteristics for interested teachers, parents and community members.

The course is designed to prepare prospective and practicing special educators as well as interested community members to recognize characteristics of autism spectrum disorders and to interpret assessments used to identify the learning and behavioral support needs for children and adults. The course emphasizes current research best practices and an interdisciplinary approach to services across the lifespan.

Taught by a practicing professional in the field, this course meets the current WVDE emergency measure of allowing teachers to add an Autism certification if they have taken two three-hour courses as part of an approved multi-categorical special education program.

The course will begin the week of Aug. 19. Interested students should contact Dr. Lynn Rupp, director of the master’s in education program at Wesleyan, at 304-473-8028 or email rupp_l@wvwc.edu. A second three-hour online class will be offered during the spring semester.
