26th annual October Fest set in Barbour

The 26th Annual Barbour County Emergency Squad October Fest Celebration has been scheduled for Oct. 25, from 5 until 10 p.m. and Oct. 26, opening at 11 a.m..

This event will take place at the emergency squad building, located on Route 250 in Philippi. The squad’s second-largest fund raising project of the year, will provide loads of fun for those of all ages.

On Friday evening, the kitchen will open at 5 p.m. Early registration for the hot dog eating contest also will begin at 5 p.m.

The annual memorial service is slated for 7 p.m. and will honor the late Woodrow Neal Jr., Harold “Frank” Hunt, Norma Jean Jones, Edward Posey, Harold T. Gray, Easter Cook, Samantha Ketchem Muncy, J. Terry Upton, Wesley Dean Weaver, Michael Ray Scott, Donnie L. Glendening, Daniel J. Stalnaker, Willard Thompson, Jr., Willard Ray Poling, Makayla A. Queen, Brenda Miner Claybourne and Dr. Terry L. Jones.

The service will be conducted by the Rev. David Brown and musical selections during the memorial service will be performed by Kelsey Bartlett. All family and friends are invited to attend.

The popular hot dog eating contest will begin at 8 p.m. The contestant eating the most hot dogs (with bun) in three minutes will receive a $100 cash prize. There is no entry fee for this contest.

The evening will close with a cakewalk that is scheduled to being at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, the kitchen will open at 11 a.m. At noon, the Little Mr. and Miss EMS Pageant will take place. Four girls and five boys are running in this year’s contest.

A new event, face painting by Kate Vincent will take place both Friday evening and Saturday.

Back by popular demand, a karaoke contest will be hosted on stage at 2 p.m. Karaoke contestants can register for the contest beginning at 1 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three performers. There is no entry fee for this contest. Karaoke services are being furnished by Five Star Karaoke of Belington. The contest is being sponsored by the Used Car Company of Philippi.

A corn hole tournament, which is a new event this year, will begin at 4 p.m. Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place winners. There is a nominal fee for each team entering. Tournament rules will be available the day of the event.

A cake social will begin at 5 p.m. The winners of the baby photo contest will be announced on stage at 6:45 p.m.

The annual Celebrity Auction which is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The auction will feature more than 60 items from local, state and national celebrities. Auction items have been received from Charlie Daniels, Alan Jackson, Pittsburgh Zoo, Washington Redskins cheerleaders, John Travolta, Dolly Parton, Bob Barker, Martina McBride, Jane Fonda, Bill Anderson and from many more celebrities. Other items that will be auctioned off include various items that were donated from local businesses. Auction services are once again being furnished by Larry Seckman and crew.

Many other events are planned throughout the festival, including hourly door prizes, a silent basket auction, a guess jar, guess cake, guess pumpkin and baby photo contest.

Tickets will be sold for a giant basket full of West Virginia University items. Hot dog platters will be available both days and will feature the famous Linda Triplett hot dog chili. Homemade pineapple upside down cake, a festival favorite prepared by squad member Kris Jones, will also be served.

All proceeds from this event will be placed in the emergency squad’s New Ambulance Fund. The squad invites the public to attend and enjoy the festivities.
