Doss earns prestigious distinction

Michael W. Doss, the city administrator for Buckhannon, recently received the Credentialed Manager designation from the International City/County Management Association. Doss is one of more than 1,300 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program. In addition, he becomes just the third local government manager in West Virginia to receive this recognition.

“It was just an honor to have,” Doss said. “I think it something that people in my profession aspire to have. It adds a notch to your professionalism, having this certification.”

Doss is a native of Huntington and has a bachelor’s degree in political science and in criminal justice from Marshall University. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from West Virginia University. In addition to his education, Doss has more than eight years of combined experience as a local government administrator.

To receive the prestigious ICMA credential, a member must have significant experience as a senior management executive in local government, have earned a degree preferably in public administration or a related field and has demonstrated a commitment to high standards of integrity and to lifelong learning and professional development.

“It shows individuals, peers and people within the public that you meet the criteria and you posses the knowledge, skills and abilities in the public sector to do that job,” Doss said. “It’s one of those summit peaks in your career and your profession to have something like this.”

ICMA’s mission to create excellence in local governance by promoting professional management worldwide and increasing the proficiency of appointed chief administrative officers, assistant administrators and other employees who serve local governments and regional entities around the world. The organization’s nearly 9,000 members in 27 countries also includes educators, students and other local government employees.
