The Davis & Elkins student group Appalachian Ensemble, formerly known as Appalachian Spirit, will present a collection of traditional music and dance numbers during its fall performance at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

The performance is presented by Davis & Elkins College. More information is available by calling the D&E Box Office at 304-637-1255 or online at www.dewv.edu/arts-entertainment.

Appalachian Ensemble’s repertoire focuses mainly on the music and dance of the Appalachian region, and includes other music and dance traditions as well.

The Davis & Elkins Dancers, under the direction of Becky Hill, will present many pieces that include clogging, flatfooting, French Canadian, waltz clog and body percussion.

Dance team members are freshmen Lauren Price and Leanna Price of Sardis, Ohio, and Matthew Olwell of Charlottesville, Va.; sophomores Kaia Kater-Hurst of Toronto, Ontario, Scotty Leach of Centralia, Wash., and Cassidy Dickens of Sutton; and seniors Millie Omps of Paw Paw, Conner Berkey of Brandy Station, Va., and Ashley Stitely of Philippi.

The string band, under the direction of Emily Miller, will play all of the music for the dance pieces as well as perform several traditional songs from West Virginia and surrounding Appalachian regions.

The band members are sophomores Leach on fiddle, Kater-Hurst on banjo and Rebecca Wudarski, of Davis, on guitar, as well as freshmen Leanna Price, vocals, and Lauren Price on mandolin.

Appalachian Ensemble was named the “People’s Choice for Entertainment” for its performance at the 2013 Ramps and Rails Festival in Elkins, and was featured in a recent edition of Goldenseal, the magazine of West Virginia traditional life produced by the Division of Culture and History.

The group’s next show in Elkins will be for a Brown Bag Lunch at the Randolph County Community Arts Center at noon on March 19.
