Local author to sign copies of trains book

James D. Porterfield of Elkins, an author and contributing editor for Railfan & Railroad magazine, will sign copies of his “Dining by Rail” from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Mainline Books in Elkins.

Samples of a dessert item once found on one of America’s premier passenger trains will be available.

Porterfield was an adjunct professor in marketing at Penn State University for 22 years and has written the monthly “On the Menu” column about dinner trains and more for the past 21 years.

“Dining by Rail: The History and the Recipes from America’s Golden Age of Railroad Cuisine,” is in its 21st year in print. It contains recipes from America’s golden age of railroad

cuisine.

Porterfield recently helped found the Center for Railway Tourism at Davis & Elkins College.
