D&E students to direct plays

ELKINS – As part of Davis & Elkins College’s unique three-week Winter Term, D&E Theatre students are directing three one-act plays. Winter One-Acts will be performed at the Boiler House Theatre today at 8 p.m.

“Bel Canto” by Will Shaffer is a play about a mother and two daughters facing not only a hurricane outside, but also coming face-to-face with the storm that has been brewing among the three of them for the last several years.

Making up the cast of “Bel Canto” are Ashley Collins, a junior from Arthurdale, as Ma; Sara Davenport, a sophomore from Spencer, as Phil; and Adalia Trudgeon, a sophomore from Elkins, as Vinnie.

Director Millie Omps, a senior from Paw Paw says, “the process of bringing this show to life has been a truly wonderful experience.” She invites “the audience to come on this journey with us and ride through this storm to find out when and if the sun will come out at all.”

“A Pretty Trap” by Tennessee Williams, which takes a nostalgic look at the American family, is directed by Carly Sable, a senior from Alexandria, Va.

The cast of “A Pretty Trap” consists of Bradley Carter, a junior from Lovingston, Va., as Jim; Ashlen Wilson, a junior from Elkins, as Amanda; and Aly Prince, a junior from Hurricane, as Laura.

Sable points out that she has “enjoyed the opportunity to get to spend three intensive weeks working and being granted the freedom to do so, and I know I will have help at all hours of the day. If that isn’t the best learning environment, I don’t know what is.”

“Check, Please” by Jonathan Rand is a comedy of speed dating gone awry.

Included in the cast of “Check, Please” are Bradley Carter, a junior from Lovingston, Va., as Guy; Alex McElroy, a sophomore from Dayton, Va., as Manny; Michael Good, a junior from Elkins, as Tom; Cassidy Dickens, a sophomore from Sutton, as Girl; Bridget Eckhardt, a senior from Silver Spring, Md., as Melanie; Hillary Paugh, a sophomore from Elkins, as Linda; Caralea Gross, a junior from Queenstown, Md., as Pearl; Owen Peet, a sophomore from Greencastle, Pa., as Ken; Josh McGlothlin, a junior from Council, Va., as Louis/Mark; and Jordan Goux, a fifth-grader at Third Ward Elementary School, as Tod.

Director Sarah Satterwhite, a senior from Farmington says one of the most rewarding aspects of the experience “is working together to create something that makes us happy.”

The production team is made up of Production Stage Managers Amber Milstead, a senior from Circleville, and Dayna Cooper, a sophomore from Parkersburg; Costuming Assistant Alexandra White, a junior from New Castle, Va.; Costume Designer Ruth Humphrey, instructor of theatre at D&E; Technical Director Tom Hackman, chair of the Division of Fine & Performing Arts and associate professor of theatre at D&E; and Producer and Director Karen Saine, assistant professor of theatre at D&E.

The Davis & Elkins College Theatre Program offers courses in theatre and theatre production designed to provide students with knowledge of and experience in an art form which has played a key role in cultural history and contemporary society. Three options are available to students working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree: Theatre Arts, Design and Technical Theatre or Theatre Education. The Theatre Arts program prepares and presents three main stage productions and three to five student-directed studio productions every year.
