Enjoy winter fun at Canaan Valley

DAVIS – If the weather is going to be cold, you might as well enjoy it.

Canaan Valley Resort State Park is known for excellent downhill skiing with natural snow augmented with machine-produced snow. With 43 trails and a vertical drop of 850 feet, Canaan Valley offers beginners to advanced skiers quality services and slopes.

“With winter in full force, Canaan Valley is the place to visit for snow recreation,” said Dave Vance, who works with Canaan Valley mountain operations at this Tucker County destination.

Canaan also offers excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as self-paced activities. There are 30 kilometers of marked, ungroomed trails and acres of wide-open meadows to roam in a peaceful setting. There are no trail fees. Cross-country skis and snowshoe rentals are available. The ski center is open daily 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The X-C Ski Center is next to the Canaan Valley State Park office.

Snow tubing at Canaan is a guest favorite for many non-skiers who visit the park. As many as eight lanes at a time are offered, all 1,200 feet in length and considered the longest in the Mid-Atlantic region. A “magic carpet” transports individuals and the tubes to the top. Tubing sessions are two hours. Tubers can enjoy a warming hut, complete with fireplace that features a ticket kiosk, concessions, restrooms, outdoor fire ring and parking area.

Tubing is fun for ages 4 and older, with a minimum 42 inch height requirement. Tubing sessions begin daily at 9 a.m. There are three 2-hour sessions per weekday. Weekends and holidays feature two additional sessions from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. Group rates are available.

Outdoor ice skating rinks in West Virginia are not plentiful, but Canaan Valley’s new rink is part of the winter recreational opportunities. The ice rink is a covered outdoor facility that overlooks the valley’s fabulous mountain views.

It features an outdoor fireplace and is behind the new main lodge. Friday and Saturday hours are 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Monday-Thursday hours are noon-8 p.m. Rental sessions are two hours and skate rentals are available. The rink also offers an indoor warming area, complete with fireplace, skate rentals, restrooms and concession machines.

A snow report is released daily by Canaan Valley Resort and includes slopes that are open for downhill skiing, snow base, tubing park information and other daily options. Visit www.wvstateparks.com and click Ski Canaan Valley or call 304-866-4121.
