Philippi Library concludes literacy program

During 2013, the Philippi Public Library participated in a unique literacy program. West Virginia Reads 150, the year-long reading initiative sponsored by West Virginia Center for the Book and the West Virginia Library Commission, has come to a close.

In honor of West Virginia’s 150th birthday in 2013, West Virginians were encouraged to read 150 books in any format, from any source, on any subject between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013.

According to employee and coordinator of the Philippi Public Library’s WV Reads 150 program, Judith Williams, 83 patrons signed up as teams, family teams or individuals and recorded reading a total of 2,756 books.

Participants ranged in age from 3 to over 65 years of age. Each group or individual turning in reading logs reflecting 150 or more books read was entered into a drawing for a $150 cash prize from the Philippi Public Library.

The Moyer family team won the drawing which was held on Jan. 14. The Laurel Creek Readers team read the most books with an impressive 620 books and Saundra Dadisman, an individual reader, read 243 books.

All participants who completed the goal of reading at least 150 books and turning in a reading log were awarded a Certificate of Participation.”

West Virginia Reads 150+ kicked off on January 1 and will run until December 31, 2014.

Patrons are encouraged to stop by the Philippi Public Library to register a team, family team or as an individual for 2014.
