WVWC to honor local churches

On Saturday, March 1, West Virginia Wesleyan College will host a Church Appreciation Day for local churches during the men’s and women’s basketball games against the Glenville State Pioneers.

This featured event is the second for Wesleyan, as the College invites several congregations in the local area to be recognized for their continued support of Wesleyan students.

“Many of our students regularly attend churches in the Buckhannon community,” said Rev. Angela Gay Kinkead, dean of the Chapel. “Over the years, pastors and congregations have not only been a supportive network for Wesleyan students, but they have provided them with additional settings for Christian formation and spiritual practice. We are thankful to them for their hospitality and care.”

The connection Wesleyan has with local churches has proven to be a tie that should be strengthened, as many students are heavily involved in the happenings of local congregations. Lauren Graham, a sophomore exercise science major and psychology and human biology minor from Bessemer City, N.C., and a member of the women’s basketball team has taken advantage of the relationship between Wesleyan and local churches to help her find her spiritual home here in Buckhannon.

“I look forward to Sunday mornings shared with my very welcoming church family at First United Methodist Church,” stated Graham. “After a tough week or before a stressful week begins, it is rejuvenating to share a morning with others by worshiping and enjoying a scrumptious breakfast. It is very comforting to know I have others to rely on and who support me with all I do at West Virginia Wesleyan.”

In addition to Church Appreciation Day, the Upshur Cooperative Parish of United Methodist Churches and Kinkead will host 30 youth and 13 staff from the Beckley, Daniels and Burlington campuses of Burlington United Methodist Family Services, Inc.

The women’s game begins at 2 p.m., with the men’s game to follow at 4 p.m. Free passes will be available to pastors wanting passes for themselves and their congregations. For more information or to reserve passes to attend the game, please contact the Wesleyan’s Chapel Office at 304-473-8007.
