Hill honored by American Legion
On Feb. 22, Evelyn Hill, 98, of Elkins was presented with a certificate of recognition for her service to our country and for her many years of membership with American Legion Post 29.
The certificate was presented by Tom Domingo, current commander of the Legion. Dennis Calain, vice commander of the Legion and TJ Coger, Sons of the Legion member, were also present in her recognition.
TJ Coger, of Elkins, interviewed Hill March 1. She was born in Wisconsin in 1916 and graduated from the nursing school in Colorado Springs, Colo.
She enlisted in the Navy during World War II and was deployed to the South Pacific to the island of Benika. Her most memorable experience while she was there was Eleanor Roosevelt’s visit to the island. Hill got the opportunity to show the First Lady around the hospital ward.
Hill was enlisted from March 23, 1943, until Jan. 1, 1946. Mrs. Hill retired from the Navy as a lieutenant and now resides in her home in Elkins.
