Make–up registration opportunity set

The make-up opportunity for the registration of Pre-Kindergarteners and Kindergarteners for the 2014-2015 school year will be from 4 to 6 p.m. April 10.

Parents are to come to the white Title I building at the Board of Education office on the corner of Smithfield and Victoria Streets with the proper registration materials.

Children born on or before Aug. 31, 2009, will register for kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year. State law requires that every child successfully complete kindergarten before entering first grade, including children who have attended Head Start.

Parents should plan to register their child for the school in the attendance area in which they live. Requests for out-of-district attendance must be submitted to the building principal in August. Requests will be considered after final enrollments are established for each school’s kindergarten program. Every attempt will be made to place children in the home attendance area as per enrollment requirements by the state.

Parents should bring a copy of their child’s record of immunization. Kindergarten children are required to be immunized for diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, rubella, Hepatitis B, and varicella. Students will not be permitted to enter school in the fall without the required immunizations, unless they are properly exempted in accordance with state law. It will take approximately one hour to complete the registration process.

Parents/guardians must bring a certified copy of their child’s birth certificate in order to register. A certified copy of the birth certificate is one issued by the Bureau of Vital Registration of the child’s state of birth. The address for West Virginia is: Vital Registration Office, Room 165, 350 Capitol Street, Charleston, WV 25301-3701.

Order forms are available at the schools and Board of Education office. The fee charged by the state of West Virginia is $12. You must have the certified copy of the child’s birth certificate in order to register and begin school in the fall.

Birth certificates and immunization records must be presented to completely register for the 2014-2015 school year.

There are approximately 70 Pre-K enrollment spaces in Upshur County for the 2014-2015 school year. Parents should enroll their child for the school in the attendance area in which they live. Upshur County Schools will work with the Pre-K centers to place children in your requested areas; however, Upshur County Schools cannot guarantee that requested locations will be granted. Before- and after-school child care will also be taken into consideration as placements are completed.

Current immunizations are required for all Pre-K children and will be reviewed at the time of registration.
