Baptist Belles to perform at Brown Bag

The Randolph County Community Arts Center’s free Brown Bag Concert will feature the Baptist Belles Wednesday at noon.

The Baptist Belles are the lady handbell ringers from the First Baptist Church in Elkins. Under the direction of Deborah Super, the group performs both sacred and secular music on English handbells.

“Not all of our ringers even read music,” said Super. “Anyone with a love of music and the ability to count to four can learn to ring bells.”

Super has directed this group as well as children’s and mixed adult groups for more than 20 years. Children can join a group in the fourth grade, and some of them continue as adult ringers. The current group ranges in age from teenagers to senior citizens.

The Belles have appeared at various community events, including the local Women’s Club, the Mountain State Forest Festival Distinguished Guest Dinner and the West Virginia State Baptist

Convention.

Their performance at the Randolph County Community Arts Center is titled “Bells on Broadway.” Show tune favorites will include selections from “Oklahoma!,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Annie,” “The Sound of Music,” “Cats,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” “Les Miserables” and

“Titanic.”

The ringers include Lori Daniels, Betty Cromer, Liz Tinney, Jayne Harris, Hannah Daniels, Mycha Kalar, Tessa Randolph, Rose Harvey, Belinda Coberly and Joyce Hutton.

The Brown Bag Concert Series is a free, monthly event produced by the Arts Center for the benefit of our community. Everyone is encouraged to bring their lunch and enjoy the show.
