Bunch of ‘Bunka’ set at library

PHILIPPI – Virginia Wolfe, a native of Grafton, will be presenting and demonstrating the art of Bunka Shishu, “painting with thread,” at the Meet Your Local Artist program at the Philippi Public Library at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Dating back to 1920, this delicate form of Japanese punch embroidery developed by Yasuhiro Kiso uses a specialized embroidery needle with rayon thread to create detailed pictures that resemble oil paintings.

Wolfe learned the craft when she and her husband moved to Florida after retirement. She reports she always enjoyed doing any kind of needle craft such as crocheting, counted cross-stitch and needlepoint and enjoyed learning “Bunka” Japanese embroidery.

The craft is popular in parts of Florida. Wolfe’s work was also displayed at Gallery 62 in Graton in 2013.
