EDITOR’S NOTE: The Datebook is reserved for nonprofit, civic organizations. Unless otherwise noted, events listed should be considered free and open to the public. Due to numerous entries, items may appear for only one week. Entries appear in chronological order and as there is space. The deadline for submissions is 4 p.m.

SCHOOL CARNIVAL: Hodgesville School Carnival will take place from 3-6 p.m. today. There will be carnival games, concessions and silent auctions. Proceeds will go to support PTO activities through out the year such as field trips and school related activities.

FIDDLE AND BANJO CONTEST: The Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College will host the the West Virginia Open Fiddle, Old-Time Banjo and Bluegrass Banjo Contest today in the college’s outdoor amphitheatre.  Registration for the contest begins at noon. The contest will start at 2 p.m. and runs until all contestants have competed. There is no registration fee to compete. Participants from any state or region are welcome to enter. Five cash prizes will be awarded as well as a Best Senior Musician prize for those age 60 and older and a Best Youth Musician prize for those age 15 and younger. The event is sponsored by Smakula Fretted Instruments, Valley Supply and McNeer, Highland, McMunn & Varner LC, Elkins-Randolph County YMCA and several anonymous donors. YARD AND BAKE SALE: Ambassador Baptist Church will host a yard and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the church. Proceeds will go toward the building fund. Sale items will include bikes, tools, furniture, etc. If you have items you would like to donate, call 304-704-7498 for pick up or drop them off at the church. The Thrift store will be open as well, and there will be a bag sale.

CHICKEN BARBECUE: North Elementary School will host a chicken barbecue today at Elkins Builders Supply. Dinners will be ready between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The meal will consist of one half chicken, roll, chips, cookie and drink. Tickets may be purchased by calling the school at 304-636-9188 or contacting any staff member.

BUCKWHEAT BREAKFAST: Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in conjunction with the Great Day of Service Ministry will host a buckwheat cake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. today in the fellowship hall of the church.

FALL FESTIVAL: Tennerton United Methodist Church will host the 20th annual Fall Festival from 1o a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Items for sale will include homemade applebutter, baked goods, hot dogs and trash ‘n treasures. There will be games for the children. Proceeds will benefit church projects.

BENEFIT FUNDRAISER: Benefit fundraiser for cancer patient Tina Louk will be from 3-8 p.m. today. at Leading Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Montrose. Activities will include dinner, 50/50 drawing, cake walk and silent auction. All proceeds will go to the family to help with medical bills and expenses. PANCAKE AND SAUSAGE FEED: Kesling Mills Lions Club will host a pancake and sausage feed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Kesling Mill Community Building. The menu will include pancakes and sausage and biscuits and gravy. For more information call Donna Matthews at 304-472-9510.

PULLED-PORK DINNER: Harman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5781 will host a pulled-pork dinner from noon to 4 p.m. today. COMEDY/MAGIC SHOW: The Mountain State Forest Festival Comedy/Magic Show returns to the schedule for the 80th celebration. The Magic of Autumn, featuring Elkins native and illusionist Joshua Jordan, begins at 7:30 p.m. today in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium. Revealing the natural lessons in the sleight of hand and misdirection, Jordan aims to motivate his audience to avoid deception and reach for the truth. The show is free for children and students in elementary school through college. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is hosted by the Campus Activities Board of Davis & Elkins College.

CHICKEN BARBECUE: The National Foundation for Transplants will host a chicken barbecue today in the Kroger parking lot to benefit Cindy Whetsell, who is in need of a liver transplant. Dinners will be ready at 11 a.m. The menu is half a chicken, coleslaw, biscuit, potato chips, snack and bottled water.

EVENING BY THE FIRE: Evening by the Fire will begin at 7 p.m. today at the end of the parking lot by the picnic shelter at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Marshmallows will be provided.

BINGO: Buckhannon-Upshur High School cheerleaders will host a craft/vendor show from noon to 2 p.m. and bingo at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Buckhannon Moose lodge. Other activities will include concessions, raffles and more.

SPECIAL WORSHIP SERVICE: Evangelist Frank Sumrall will be in services at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday at Jubilee Outreach Ministries. He has ministered throughout the world in 27 nations and currently travels nationally and internationally ministering the gospel to the world. He is the son of Dr. Lester Sumrall. JAMBOREE: Century Jamboree featuring The Century House Band with special guest John Daugherty will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Century Community Center. The kitchen opens at 1 p.m. For more information, email centuryjamboreewv@gmail.com.

MUSICAL PERFORMANCES: Christian pop musician Curt Anderson will play two church services Sunday: 10 a.m. at Summit Church in the American Mountain Theater and 8 p.m. in Robbins Memorial Chapel on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. Anderson is the opening act for Celebrate the Spirit! an evening of contemporary Christian and gospel music featuring The Franks Family at 7 p.m. Monday on the downtown stage at Elkins Town Square. SENIOR CENTER BAZAAR: Randolph County Senior Center Bazaar will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Items for sale will include crafts, jellies, candies and more. There also will be a quilt raffle.

FLU SHOT CLINICS:     Tucker County Health Department will host flu shot clinics at the following times: from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, First United Methodist Church in Parsons and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Davis Fire Hall. Seasonal flu shots will be given to anyone 18 years of age and older. If you have Medicare or insurance, bring your card. You will not be charged a co-pay. If you don’t have insurance, you can still receive a flu shot at no cost.

12-HOUR BASEMENT SALE: 12-hour basement sale will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, South Florida Street in Buckhannon. Grab bags will be available from 7-8 p.m. Proceeds benefit mission projects of the United Methodist Women.

LIBRARY CLOSURE: Elkins-Randolph County Public Library will close Thursday through Oct. 8 for the Mountain State Forest Festival. The library will reopen at 9 a.m. Oct. 10.

CITY HALL CLOSURE: Elkins City Hall will be closed Friday for the Mountain State Forest Festival. Garbage schedule is as follows: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will remain on regular schedule. Garbage normally picked up Thursday will be picked up Wednesday. Garbage normally picked up Friday will be picked up Thursday beginning at 5 a.m.

CLINE REUNION: The reunion of family and friends of the late Thomas and Dora Ritter Cline will be Oct. 9 at the Tacy Community Building outside of Philippi. A covered-dish dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. Meat and table service will be provided.

BLOOD DONATIONS: American Red Cross blood donations will be from noon to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12, First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins.

MISS AUTUMN ON THE DRYFORK: Miss Autumn on the Dryfork pageant will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 13. There will be two divisions in the pageant: children first through 12th grade and children newborn through age 5 (not in elementary school). For more information, call Michelle Eye at 304-668-1289.

REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE: A consumer representative from the Attorney General’s Office will conduct public events throughout the north-central counties. The office representative will educate consumers on the latest scams in their area, provide tips on how to guard their personal information and answer questions about consumer protection settlements. BOOK SALE: Literacy Volunteers of Upshur County will host its semi-annual book sale from noon until 3 p.m. Oct. 13, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Oct. 14 and from 8 a.m. until noon Oct. 15 at the Franklin Street Entrance of the Social Hall at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Buckhannon. MEAT SHOOT: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5781 and Auxiliary will host a meat shoot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at the post home in Harman. STAFF CONCERT: Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College will present an Old-Time Week Staff Concert featuring the Davis & Elkins College Appalachian Ensemble and the entire Old-Time Week Staff at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium. The concert is part of Augusta’s October Old-Time Week, Oct. 16-21, featuring West Virginia musicians. There is an admission charge for adults and for students; but the concert is free to the Davis & Elkins College community. FILM PREMIERE: Film premiere of “The Crooked Tune, an Old-Time Fiddler in a Modern World” will take place at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 19 in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. The work features the life story and music of West Virginia old-time musician Dave Bing. There is no admission fee. The screening is part of Augusta’s October Old-Time Week. PICKIN’ INDOORS: Pickin’ Indoors, local  old-time, bluegrass and country jam sessions, will take place from 6-10 p.m. Oct. 19 in The Joni and Buck Smith Arts Forum in Myles Center for the Arts on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. The sessions are hosted weekly by the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College. There is no fee. FILM SCREENING: Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College will present a film screening of “George Rashid: The Leper of Pickens” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Halliehurst Library. The event is free and open to the public. Producers Jason Harman and Peggy Proudfoot Harman will introduce the film and a question-and-answer session will follow. In her research, Peggy Harman discovered that “George Rashid of Pickens was diagnosed with leprosy, but probably didn’t actually have leprosy at all. His medical case is thought to have started the public health system in West Virginia.” The film follows Rashid’s life, including his journey across the United States and through Randolph County, and includes interviews with several Randolph County historians and residents. The screening is part of Augusta’s October Old-Time Week, Oct. 16-21, featuring West Virginia musicians.
