Public library depends on tax-based funds

Philippi Public Library Director Judy Buckner Larry asked the Philippi City Council this week for continued financial support to help match state grant-in-aid funding with local tax funds.

She said public libraries are required to match state funding with local revenues. Because of this, the Philippi Public Library’s funding depends on contributions from agencies like the City Council and County Commission, Larry said.

She said the library can’t run on late fees and fundraising events. She thanked City Council for its past support and asked that its support continue, despite budget tightening that she said all agencies currently appear to be facing. She also asked that the contribution be increased to help with the anticipated tightening of the library budget.

She said the library plays an important role in the city, offering children’s programs and an opportunity to access the Internet and research materials that many kids in the area would not have otherwise.

Mayor Jerry Mouser said individuals also can help by making a personal contribution. To inquire about making a donation or other ways to help, anyone interested can call Larry at 304-457-3495 or stop by the library.
