Spears wins Oratorical Scholarship Sectional Contest

After placing first in the District competition four weeks ago, Lauren Spears competed in and won the American Legion Oratorical Sectional contest held in Romney on Saturday. She advances to the State Finals in Shinnston on March 8.

Spears is a 9th-grade student at the Highland Adventist School in Elkins.

The National High School Oratorical Scholarship Program was created in 1937 and is a part of the National Americanism program of The American Legion. Its purpose is to create interest, appreciation and a better knowledge of the United States on the part of high school students.

The contest requires the presentation of an eight- to 10-minute memorized speech written by the contestant on the subject of the U.S. Constitution.

In addition, each contestant must speak extemporaneously for three to five minutes on one of four amendments made known to each contestant five minutes prior to the time of delivery.
