Irish Week underway at Augusta

ELKINS – Whether they hail from the Emerald Isle or practice the traditional heritage, they all have one thing in common a knack for bringing their audiences a true Irish entertainment experience.

More than a dozen musicians and dancers will combine their talents for Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College Irish Week through Friday.

Highlighting the week are two public concerts on Tuesday and Thursday in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium on the College campus. For both shows, doors open at 7 p.m. and the music begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Tuesday show features Bodhr’n drummer Eoin McQuinn; vocalist, flutist and tin whistle player Norah Rendell; guitar and bouzouki accompanist Brian Miller; vocalist Shay Black; fiddler and accordionist Damien Connolly; and dancers Shannon Dunne and Kevin Doyle. Dan Neely will serve as master of ceremonies.

A Ceili dance will take place after the concert in the open-air pavilion featuring music by Ivan Goff, Jimmy Keane and Josh Dukes with caller Jim Keenan.

Performers for the Thursday show include flutist Ivan Goff, vocalist Bridget Fitzgerald, multi-instrumentalist Josh Dukes, fiddler Colin Farrell, guitarist Don Penzien and dancer Jimmy Keane. Neely will serve as master of ceremonies.

A Ceili dance will take place after the concert in the open-air pavilion featuring music by Damien Connolly and Penzien with caller Shannon Dunne.

Other events for the week include:

Monday:

7 p.m.: “String Changing and Instrument Maintenance,” a free workshop by Bob Smakula in Halliehurst Library.

7:30 p.m.: “Exploring Nostalgia for the Future: History of the Augusta Heritage Center” will be presented by Augusta Heritage Center Program Coordinator Brittany Hicks in Madden Student Center Timms Lounge.

8 p.m.: “Tunes on the Porch,” a jam session with Irish Week instructors on the Halliehurst porch.

Tuesday:

4-6:30 p.m.: Show and Sell featuring crafts, recordings and instruments on the Halliehurst porch.

Wednesday:

6-10 p.m.: Pickin’ in the Park at Elkins City Park.

8 p.m.: Irish Week Party on the Halliehurst porch with a barbecue supper.

Friday:

1:30 p.m.: Irish Week Student Showcase, location to be announced.

8 p.m.: Ceili Dance featuring the Augusta Ceili Band and special guests with callers Jim Keenan and Shannon Dunne in the open-air pavilion.
