MILL CREEK — On April 6, George Ward Elementary and Tygart Valley Middle/High School presented the third annual Run Like a Fool 5K for walkers and runners.

This year a one-mile walk was added with a hayride feature. Both schools are using the profits from the event to help replace the40-year old swings on George Ward’s playground and TVHS/MS are adding water fountains that also act as a water bottle filler.

A total of $3,500 was raised with this event by through sponsors and support from the community.

Race coordinator Dustin Garner said, “This year marked the biggest turnout for our 5K. We had 158 people sign up this year and we couldn’t be happier about that. We’ve come a long way in the three years we’ve been hosting this race.”

George Ward Elementary School’s school counselor Mark Allen said, “There is a lot that goes into this event but it is worth it to see the community come out, support the kiddos and to create memories for our students, families and community members.

The Tygarts Valley High School softball squad participated in the third annual Run Like a Fool 5K to benefit the playground at George Ward Elementary School.

“For a lot of them it is their first 5K experience and hopefully not their last,” he said. “The bonus is that the money raised will impact our students on a daily basis.”

The 5K committee consisted of Mark Allen, Tessa Garver-Daniels, Tommy Oldaker, Angela Phillips Kyle, Stephanie Zickefoose, Melissa Defibaugh, Sarah Bell, Melissa Walters, Chris Gilgenest and Amanda Bell.

The committee would like to thank the Fire Chief Rodney McAtee and the Mill Creek/Huttonsville Volunteer Fire Department for assisting with traffic control and providing safety for the runners; TVHS coach Melissa Walters and her cheerleaders for taking care of the water stations and encouraging our runner/walkers; Mountaineer Insurance for providing the water bottles, prizes/rewards and providing their employees to help work the event; and the sponsors: Tygart Valley Lions Club, Valley Health Care, Elkins Auto, Huttonsville Par Mar, Bob’s Mini Mart, and Citizens Bank of West Virginia.
