Elouise and James Warner
A 60th wedding anniversary reception for James and Elouise Warner will take place Oct. 5 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the 88 Lounge in the Bicentennial Inn in Buckhannon. Friends and family are invited for cake and coffee.
The Warners were married Sept. 25, 1953, in Oakland, Md., a year after graduating from Buckhannon-Upshur High School. In 1955, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Air Force-the beginning of a stellar journalism career that encompassed three decades and took the family to several states and countries.
His journalism assignments took him to Australia, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, New Guinea, Okinawa, the Philippines, Guam, Taiwan, Thailand, and in 1968, South Vietnam. As a war correspondent in Vietnam, Jim earned three Air Medals, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
When Jim retired from the Air Force in 1975, the Warners moved back to Buckhannon where he began writing for The Record Delta, serving at different times as the sports editor, news editor and managing editor. Thirty-eight years later he is still writing sports for the Delta. Jim is the son of the late Albert Ray and Irene Smith Warner.
After years of following a military spouse and his career, Elouise began a career of her own. In 1975, she started as a teller at a hometown bank, and retired 23 years later as vice president overseeing all tellers at Bank One’s Buckhannon branch. She then worked at the Western Steer Steakhouse in Buckhannon until it closed in 2011. Elouise is the daughter of the late John Franklin and Lillian Carter Reese.
The Warners have four children: Sandra Wright, a retired Department of Defense secretary, and husband, Curt, of Panama City, Fla.; James Warner Jr., a cardiologist at Stroobant’s Cardiovascular Center with Centra Health in Lynchburg, Va., and wife, Robin; Rodney Warner, a teacher specialist for Alternative Learning Center in Gainesville, Fla., and wife Deborah; and his twin, Russell Warner, a physical education teacher and behavior disorders specialist at Elkins Mountain School, Elkins, and an athletic trainer at Buckhannon-Upshur High School, Buckhannon, and wife, Renee.
They have eight grandchildren: Gary Cope and wife, Ginger, of Blacksburg, Va.; Alexis Warner of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Brittany Conover and husband, Ryan, of Buckhannon; Michael Warner of Blacksburg, Va.; Megan Warner of King George, Va.; Philip Warner of Philippi; Caitlin Warner of Morgantown; and Courtney Warner of Buckhannon.
They have four stepgranddaughters: Emily Wright of Montgomery, Ala.; Robin Wright of Prattville, Ala.; Chelsea Selph, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Staci Selph, Gainesville, Fla.
They have four great-grandchildren: Nicholas Cope, Emma Dennison, Matthew Lyke and Scarlett Lyke.
