Mr. and Mrs. Robert Joe Harman
Mr and Mrs Robert Joe Harman of Elkins celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary Aug. 17.
They were married Aug. 17, 1962, in Elkins at the Crystal Springs Community Church, by the late Rev. Kenneth Corley.
Mr. Harman is the son of the late Dickson and Icie Harman. He retired in 1996 from Monongahela Power Co. with 34 years as a crewman. He also retired from the West Virginia Army National Guard 201st Field Artillery Battalion as a first sergeant with 39 years of service, including serving in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
Mr. Harman is an active member of Post 29 American Legion and Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Elkins. He is a past commander of Post 29 and in 2016 was honored with the Blue Cap Legionnaire of the Year award. He works with funeral homes and families to organize military funerals in the area for fallen veterans. He is the caretaker of the American Legion Little Arlington Cemetery in Cravensdale and serves as chairman of the cemetery board.
Mrs. Harman, the former Virginia Fansler, is the daughter of the late Boyd and Kittie Fansler. She is a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
They both oversee that the grounds of the cemetery are maintained, meet with families to reserve plots and continually update maps and book work. They are members of Elkins First Church of the Nazarene.
They are the parents of two daughters, Kathy Hamrick and husband, Tommy, and Roberta Brown and husband, Dan, all of Elkins. They also have one grandchild, Tyler Hamrick; two stepgrandchildren, Gary Brown and wife, Lynnlee, and Samantha Casas and husband, Robert; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren, Gavin, Ariella and Adalynn Brown and Brayden, Amara, Daniella and Samuel Casas.
