Fleming receives accounting award

ELKINS — Dr. Arron Scott Fleming is the recipient of the 2016 Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.

Fleming holds both the CPA and CMA certifications. He earned his bachelor of business administration with a major in accounting from West Virginia University in 1988 and his MBA from WVU in 1996. He obtained his Ph.D. in accounting and information systems from Virginia Tech in 2005.

Fleming began his accounting career outside of the classroom and initially worked in industry for 10 years.

He taught at Marietta College, Salem-Teikyo University and West Virginia Wesleyan College prior to his current position at West Virginia University. Fleming began as the visiting professor of accounting at West Virginia University in January 2005 and became an associate professor of accounting in September 2012, where he also served as chair of the Department of Accounting in the College of Business and Economics at WVU from September 2012 until May 2015. He teaches a variety of courses at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral level and periodically conducts workshops on forensic accounting and fraud examination overseas.

His current research interests include investigations into the behavioral nature of corporate governance  with emphasis on executive compensation, group decision making, ethics and whistle blowing. Fleming and his co-authors were the winners of the 2012 Hubbard Award for significant contributions to the anti-fraud profession from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the 2013 Forensic Accounting Section Research Award from the American Accounting Assocition and the 2013 Max Block Award for the best technical analysis from the CPA Journal. He is a member of the WVSCPA, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the American Accounting Association, the Institute of Management Accountants and the West Virginia Council of Accounting Educators.

Fleming has been the president of the West Virginia Council of Accounting Educators three times, and is the current president of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Accounting Association.

He serves on the Business and Economic Advisory Board for Marietta College in Ohio and on the St. Brendan Parish Finance Council in Elkins.

Fleming and his wife, Julie, reside in Elkins.
