D&E?students attend reading conference

Five Davis & Elkins College Elementary Education majors recently attended the West Virginia Reading Association’s 57th annual conference titled “Olympians for Reading, Carrying the Torch for Literacy” at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs.

The sessions focused on student motivation and achievement, common core standards and increasing parent involvement, among other topics.

Lisa Papez, a senior from Beverly; Emilee Beckwith, a junior from Beverly; Markita Prieto, a senior from Belington; Rivanna Kyle, a senior from Mill Creek; Samantha Crabtree, a senior from Emmitsburg, Md.; and Sarah Shelton, a senior from Belington, were accompanied by their professor and past president of the association, Sue Talbott.

“It is important to not only teach students the content of the subject, but to also instill a sense of professionalism and pride,” Talbott says. “The conference gives the D&E students the opportunity to interact with professionals in the field as well as attend sessions to support best practices in teaching reading.”

The students attended the author’s luncheon with featured speakers and West Virginia authors Jim Strawn and Chuck Stump, and the keynote address “Explicit Instruction: Prevention and Intervention” by Dr. Anita Archer.

Strawn and Stump are the authors of the “Sad, Mad, Glad” book series which explores feelings and attitudes that affect learning. Archer presented information on practices for designing lessons, delivering instruction, and providing appropriate practices.

Additional sessions included: “The Common Core and Your Reading Classroom,” “Working with Parents: Increasing Parent Involvement,” “Changing the Course of the Struggling Reader,” “The Role of Technology in Literacy” and “Reading Instruction.”

The West Virginia Reading Association is an affiliate of the International Reading Association which supports literacy professionals through a wide range of resources, advocacy efforts, and professional development.

The mission of D&E’s Teacher Education Program is to prepare and inspire future teachers for success in the classroom and for thoughtful engagement with the world.
