Garden club hosts brunch
The Emma Scott Garden Club hosted its Jack Frost Brunch recently at the Elkins Motor Lodge. Judy Guye, president, introduced Paul J. Harmon of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, who presented the program on the West Virginia Wildflower Pilgrimage, held at Blackwater Falls State Park on Mother’s Day weekend.
This will be the 52nd year for the Pilgrimage, attended annually by 300 people. Dr. Eugene Hutton of Elkins had 37 years of attendance. The Wildflower Pilgrimage is a special project of the West Virginia Garden Club Inc. and co-sponsored by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
Bird Walks are scheduled at 6 a.m. from Blackwater Lodge and scheduled tours begin at 8 a.m. To help identify particular plants and birds, point out interesting flora and fauna and answer questions, specialists will be on hand from West Virginia University, West Virginia DNR, West Virginia Garden Club Inc., Brooks Bird Club and various colleges. There are 12 tours scheduled on both Friday and Saturday. Tours include Smoke Hole, Dolly Sods, Jenningston-Gladwin, Otter Creek, Sinks of Gandy, to name a few. Registration has begun and anyone interested is encouraged to register early with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources in Charleston.
Guye introduced new members of the Emma Scott Garden Club, Rosemary Markley, Kathy Hopkins, Maria Valentine and Joann Gabel. The club will begin a new project this spring, creating a flower bed under the Welcome To Elkins sign. The sign will be reinstalled on Route 219 near the recent repair of the retaining wall by the Division of Highways.
Guye encouraged members to attend the West Virginia Garden Club Convention in Morgantown April 8-9 at the Waterfront Hotel. Awards will be presented for Garden Club projects, of which the Emma Scott Garden Club has applied for several.
Membership in the Emma Scott Garden Club is open to those who have a love of gardening, floral design and civic environmental responsibility. For more information, call Judy Guye at 304-636-4763.
