American Legion shares group news

The Ladies American Legion Auxiliary of the Buckhannon Post 7 met Jan. 8. The meeting was called to order by president Connie Bailey. The opening prayer was given by Chaplain Shirley Perry. The pledge to the flag was led by Sergeant-at-Arms Katrina Meyers, followed by the reading of the Preamble.

The Mid-Winter Conference was conducted Feb. 8-9 in Huntington. Connie Bailey, Shirley Perry, Peggy Shreve and April Whitfield attended. Approximately 200 people attended the conference.

Bailey announced that the District 3 Conference will be hosted by the Auxiliary on March 9 at the American Legion headquarters in Buckhannon. It will be attended by members of both the Legion and auxiliary in the district. Perry will be in charge of the registration and collection of dues from 8 to 10 a.m.

Refreshments will be served during that time, after which the Auxiliary members will remain in the Legion building for their meeting, while the Legion members will retire to the Veterans of Foreign Wars building for theirs. Lunch will be served at the VFW, followed by a program that Legion officers will present.

An appreciation dinner was served Feb. 19 for the sponsors of those attending last year’s Girls’ State and Boys’ State gatherings.

Poppy distribution will take place at various business locations throughout the area during the first weekend of May. Strawberry dessert sales will take place during the West Virginia Strawberry Festival May 16-18.
