Jane Lew Lions Club race moves

The Jane Lew Lions Club’s 28th annual General Lightburn 5K and 1 Mile Runs and the 5K Wellness Walk sponsored by Consol Energy have been moved from busy Jane Lew roadways to Stonewall Resort.

Lions Club members viewed the heavy traffic in Jane Lew on U.S. 19 and Hackers Creek Road too busy and too dangerous. After discussions with resort staff, the decision was made to move the 28th event to the resort. The course will now take runners and walkers throughout the picturesque grounds of the park and across the lake walkway.

On race day, April 27, the resort and the state park surrounding it will provide beautiful spring views.

Runners, walkers, families and friends of all ages are invited to participate in this annual event.

The race is a sanctioned event by USA Track and Field, and timing services will be done by The Runner’s High from Grove City, Pa. The Wellness Walk is a noncompetitive event for health and fun. Children 12 years of age and younger are invited to walk with no entry fee when accompanied by a parent.

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is providing a Wellness Check during the event. Its staff will offer blood pressure, weight and height measurements along with BMI calculations. This is a continuation of the hospital’s initiative to support “West Virginia on the move” and encourage local residents to get “Lewis County on the move.”

Stonewall Resort is offering special room rates for those interested in staying overnight or for the weekend.

Proceeds from the event will be used to provide local and statewide community service projects. No administrative costs are paid from funds collected from the public. Past projects have included Suitcases for Kidz, Angel Tree gifts, West Virginia Sight Foundation, eye testing and glasses for qualified applicants and disaster support during the June 2012 storm along with the Romney School for the Deaf and Blind, Leader and Pilot Dog Programs and the Lions Club International Foundation. Lions Clubs worldwide provide service to their communities.

Registration is being done online at Iplayoutside.com and additional sites for picking up the paper applications will be announced.
