Legion Auxiliary group hosts meeting

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 7 members took part in a dinner March 12 before hosting a regular meeting, which was called to order by Connie Bailey, president.

The opening prayer was given by Shirley Perry, chaplain. The pledge to the flag was led by Katrina Meyers, sergeant-at-arms, followed by the reading of the preamble.

The District 3 conference hosted by the Auxiliary on March 9 was at the American Legion headquarters in Buckhannon. It was attended by members of both the Legion and the Auxiliary of Third District.

Shirley Perry was in charge of registration. Refreshments were served during that time, after which the Auxiliary members remained in the Legion building for their meeting while the Legion members retired to the Veterans of Foreign Wars building. Lunch was served after the meeting a the VFW. Perry reported the meeting had been very successful with officers from all the units in the district attending and participating in the two-hour meeting.

Delores Wilson read an extensive report on flag etiquette observed by the American Legion at their meetings and other functions.

Poppy distribution was announced for the first week of May. Assignments for those duties will be made at the next meeting under the direction of Peggy Shreve, poppy chairman.

Strawberry dessert sales will take place during festival week on May 16, 17 and 18.

April Whitfield, Girls State chairwoman, announced that she hoped to sponsor 27 students who are eligible to attend Girls State Camp. She read a letter of appreciation she had received from one of the previous year’s attendees. She hopes to be able to find sponsors for at least 20 girls again this year. Whitfield also reported that she is still working on establishing a website for the Auxiliary. Good of the order was taken.

After a closing prayer, the meeting was adjourned.

The next regular meeting will take place April 9.
