The West Virginia State Civilian Conservation Corps Museum Association met Feb. 20 at the meeting room at Ryan’s Family Steakhouse in Clarksburg.

The meeting was called to order by acting President Charles Piercy. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Harlen Frederick. Dr. Robert Anderson gave the treasurer’s report. Richard Bailey presented a handout of minutes of the Jan. 16 meeting. Both were approved.

Anderson also reported on the annual meeting of the Clarksburg-Harrison County Cultural Foundation. He and Richard Bailey attended. The Foundation presented a grant for the State CCC Museum to Bailey. A historic CCC display was displayed at the Waldomore that day.

“We very much appreciate the work of the Clarksburg-Harrison Cultural Foundation and what they do for the community,” Anderson said.

Anderson also reported the CCC museum has an 80th anniversary CCC display at the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library. This will be on display through early April.

“We urge people who visit the library to stop by and check it out,” he said.

The association discussed at length two upcoming museum events: The 80th anniversary celebration of the signing of the CCC into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt will held at the State CCC Museum located in the historic Quiet Dell School, Harrison County, on March 31. Ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. There will be a program with a flag-raising ceremony, entertainment and refreshments.

“It is unbelievable what the CCC accomplished across the land during its existence from 1933 until the war started, which brought the program to an end in 1942,” Piercy said. “As you travel across the state and nation, you can see the evidence of the CCC. The CCC ‘boys’ furthered their education by hands-on learning. They built parks, roads; surveyed and mapped; improved beaches; built countless fish hatcheries; put out forest fires; planted trees; restored historic structures; built dams, bridges; and basically rebuilt the infrastructure of this great land, while learning discipline in an army-like camp.”

The other event planned is the annual Spring Jubilee, set for April 20 at the Quiet Dell United Methodist Church, across from the museum. The gathering lasts from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A dinner cooked by the United Methodist Women will be served at noon. Reservations are required by calling Anderson at 304-842-5194. Cost of dinner is $14. All CCC veterans can have dinner at no cost. There will be a program, displays and an auction. The public is invited to both events.

Jimmy Ray Walters; CCC board member and chair of the State CCC float committee, was set to be awarded the West Virginia History Hero designation Feb. 21 at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston.

Bailey announced that the annual CCC reunion at Watoga State Park in Pocahontas County is scheduled for June 7 and 8 at the Watoga CCC museum.

There also was discussion of progress at the CCC replica barracks. Other business was discussed and the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting of the State CCC Museum Association is set for 11:30 a.m. March 20 at Ryan’s Steakhouse.
