Drama Workshop debut set

The Pocahontas County Drama Workshop will present the comedy “The Pickers,” a play by director Margaret Baker, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Pocahontas County Opera House in Marlinton.

It’s snowing. It’s snowing a lot. Hazel Arbuckle thinks that she and her husband, Lloyd, are in for a quiet evening sitting by the wood stove, eating rice left over from Y2K and revitalizing their marriage. When a car bound for Snowshoe skids into a tree outside their remote West Virginia home, Hazel finds herself playing hostess to a senator from Virginia and his none too gracious “wife,” Briella. Hazel breaks out the Halloween party napkins and starts putting on airs while Lloyd becomes increasingly suspicious that the senator is not quite who he pretends to be.

Meanwhile, the stranded couple starts to fear that their host and hostess may be a little too obsessed with dead dogs, collectible Avon bottles and finding out secrets that could destroy the senator’s career. Have they landed square in the middle of a Stephen King plot?

Hazel Arbuckle will be played by newcomer Joyce Kennison, while her real-life husband Dwayne (aka Uncle Edward) will portray Lloyd. Sen. Gene Jones will be played by Drama Workshop veteran Scott Triplett, while actor/director Emily Newton rounds out the cast as Briella.

Tickets for “The Pickers” will be available at the door. The Opera House is located at 818 Third Ave. in Marlinton. More information is available by calling 304-799-6645.
