City of Buckhannon to reroute traffic

The City of Buckhannon will continue work on the Buckhannon Gateway East Transportation Enhancement Project, commonly known as the sidewalk and street light project, through Nov. 15, 2013.

The Street Department will now begin construction activities at the intersection of East Main Street and Lightburn streets and will work towards College Avenue in the weeks to come. Work activities include the demolition of existing sidewalks; the installation of new concrete sidewalks and street lights; street widenings and the necessary lawn restoration activities normally associated with street improvement projects.

To alleviate traffic congestion during the morning and early afternoon hours, East Main Street will be closed to all traffic (except for emergency vehicles, tractor trailers and school buses) from Lightburn Street to College from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The street closure is due to the sidewalk and street light construction-related activities that will be taking place. During these times, no traffic will be allowed to enter the work zone area.

The Street Department will be working in half-block increments during this phase of the project, meaning that they will have East Main Street closed from a street intersection to an alley intersection and then from an alley intersection to a street intersection. This closure pattern will continue until the end of the project.

Alternate routes of travel include Factory Street, Sedgwick Street, Lumber Street, Florence Street and all public alleys outside of the work zone area.

The new traffic pattern will remain in effect until the Street Department completes construction activities through the East Main Street and College Avenue intersection.
