Wilkins to receive Poetry Story Box
Second grade teacher Cindy Wilkins and North Fork Elementary School in Circleville have been chosen to represent West Virginia as the recipients of the children’s Poetry Story Box for the month of April.
The Story Box Project is an international arts and literacy initiative created in 1995 by Kevin Cordi, a professional storyteller and a professor of education at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio.
“Kids need to experience poetry and see the joy that comes from working with poetry,” Cordi said. Twenty-five nationally renowned poets have contributed unfinished works to share in the Poetry Box and are inviting children to co-create with them. The students of North Fork Elementary will now be able to say they’ve written a poem with a famous poet. Special poetry activities and writing events are planned for the entire month to help celebrate being selected to host the Poetry Box.
After its time at N.F.E.S., Wilkins will ship the Poetry Box with North Fork’s students’ poems in it, on to the next location in Wisconsin, where children and adults there will have the opportunity to complete poems and contribute them to the collection. The box will continue to travel across the United States until its return to Columbus in 2015.
