Spooky Night event announced

FRENCH CREEK  — The West Virginia Wildlife Center is a favorite family destination during the summer, but autumn brings the “Spooky Night” tours that are scheduled to please everyone in the family this Friday and Saturday.

Hayrides around the 1.25-mile exhibit loop begin at 4:30 and run until 7 p.m.

Tyler Evans, the Center’s wildlife biologist, says kids will love the animals in the loop.

“You’ll be able to see mountain lions, deer, wolf, bobcat, owls, eagles, and more,” he said. “The only animals not in the loop are the buffalo, elk and river otters. The otters have been readied for winter by now.”

According to Judy Channell, the Center’s secretary, guided walking tours begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m., although the guides will lead tours until the last person who arrived before 9 p.m. finishes a tour.

“These tours are in the dark, and folks can get as spooked as they want,” she said. “We don’t concentrate on the garish or gut-wrenching but mostly just family friendly “spooky.”

We also have a maze in the pavilion filled with motion activated characters that put the capital S into “Spooky!”

Channell noted free hot chocolate and cookies will be available, compliments of the Christian Fellowship Church.

“The church volunteers have been helping with this event since its inception in 2011,” she noted. “We are very fortunate for their dedication in helping with the concessions for this event.”

The West Virginia State Wildlife Center, operated by the Wildlife Resources section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, is a modern zoological facility displaying native and introduced state wildlife where visitors can see, enjoy and learn about the Mountain State’s rich wildlife heritage.

The Center is located 12 miles south of Buckhannon on State Route 20. Follow State Route 20 North for two miles to the Center.
