Brown selected for scholarship

Madeline Brown

ELKINS — Madeline Brown of Hedgesville has been chosen to receive a four-year scholarship to Davis & Elkins College. A senior at Hedgesville High School, Brown was selected from a group of 62 highest achieving high school seniors participating in Senator Leadership & Scholarship Day on the college campus Nov. 12.

Students vying for the scholarship submitted essays and participated in interviews with a panel made up of a Davis & Elkins alumnus or alumna, a current student and a faculty member.

To be eligible to compete, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and received acceptance to attend Davis & Elkins. Students were also required to submit a list of outstanding leadership honors or awards they have received and describe three skills that have strengthened them as a leader. The essay of no more than 500 words consisted of a personal statement outlining the students’ interests, life experiences, goals and commitment to leadership.

“It was truly an honor to welcome this group of students and their families to the Davis & Elkins College campus for Leadership Day,” said D&E President Chris A. Wood. “It’s an exciting day for our campus community as we get to meet with these students and experience their enthusiasm for embarking on the next chapter in their lives.”

Brown is the daughter of Andy and Wanda Brown of Hedgesville. She plans to pursue degrees in business and hospitality management and participate in cross country and track.

At Hedgesville High School, Brown maintains a 4.0 GPA and participates in athletic and leadership roles. She is a member of the Eagles cross country and track teams, and serves as senior class president, Senior Steering Club president, Student Government Association vice president, Rotary Interact Club secretary and National Honors Society secretary. In addition, Brown is a member of the Speech and Debate Association, Key Club and Honorary Council, as well as special education coordinator of the Junior Civitan Club.

In addition to the top scholarship award, 10 students were selected for honorable mention awards of $1,000.
