CCC Museum hosts February meeting

Members of the West Virginia State Civilian Conservation Corps Museum Association prepare to tour the newly renovated Upper Barracks CCC Museum Addition.

QUIET DELL — The February meeting of the West Virginia State Civilian Conservation Corps Museum Association took place Feb. 19 in Quiet Dell, Harrison County, at the CCC Museum.

Vice President Reggie Rogers of Chub Run conducted the meeting and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Patricia Piercy of Kingmont recited the Invocation. A solemn moment of silence to commemorate the untimely passing, on Feb. 2, of President Charles “Charlie” Piercy Jr. was observed.

Vickie Mick, treasurer, of Bridgeport presented the financial report. In the absence of Secretary Richard Bailey, Betty Kehrer of Bridgeport recorded the minutes.

Rogers reported on the Dedication of the Upper Barracks Museum Renovation on Jan. 21. “This was a very special day. Attendance was very good,” he continued. “Three CCC Boys, Ron Watson; President of the Harrison County Commission Nick Matafis; and Commission Barracks Project Coordinator and CCC Museum Founder Dr. Robert Anderson assisted in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.”

Co-curator Joy Winet reported on the management and reorganization of CCC memorabilia for the upcoming spring and summer tourist and visitors season. “We are working on new displays and ways of improving our outreach to the public.” Winet said.

Betty Kehrer discussed her efforts to organize and display historic museum newsletters and newspaper clippings.

Rogers announced that Civilian Conservation Corps Anniversary Day will be commemorated statewide and at the Museum in Quiet Dell from 1:30-3:30 p.m. March 26. “On March 31, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the CCC Bill into law. This is our annual event to take note of that day that meant so much to our U.S. History.” Rogers added, “The public is invited.”

Dr. Robert Anderson of Bridgeport brought up discussion of the annual Spring CCC Recognition Jubilee which is set for 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 15 at the Quiet Dell United Methodist Church.

“The public is invited. We honor the legacy of the CCC every year on the third Saturday of April,” stated Anderson. “The event will include a reception from 9:30-10:45 a.m., CCC displays, recognition of CCC Boys and CCC Family, a CCC Hall of Fame presentation, a catered noon luncheon and short auction.”

Edwin Winet of Fairmont displayed photos of actual CCC barracks and how the committee could implement them to be as close to reality as possible.

A tour of the museum is scheduled for today. On March 17, members Betty Kehrer, Joy Winet and Ruth Justice plan to attend a seminar of the West Virginia Association of Museums. Also, the association plans to set up a display table at the annual History Expo at the Marion County Courthouse April 1.

Plans also are being made to be represented at the annual Hager CCC Reunion at Watoga State Park, Pocahontas County from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m June 10.
