ELKINS — For the third year in a row, The Custard Stand was named one of the 101 Unique Places to Dine by the West Virginia Division of Tourism for 2017.

“We are honored to get this news and keep the spotlight on our hometown,” said Dee Cowger, owner of Custard Stand Food Products and The Custard Stand restaurants. “After the flood in 2016, our town and our county are still rebounding.”

“We hope more visitors will stop by for a hot dog or a bowl of our chili soup and fall in love with the charm of our town and the great outdoors surrounding us,” said Angie Cowger, who is also an owner of the Custard Stand companies.

The Custard Stand opened as a take-out dairy bar in 1991. In 2015, to accommodate a much-needed expansion at the production facility, the Cowgers moved the dairy bar to Main Street in Webster Springs. They turned the Carpenter 5&10 into a sit-down restaurant with a community room. The restaurant features a walk-up window. In early 2009, the Cowgers opened The Custard Stand in Flatwoods. Since 2010, franchise owners in West Virginia have opened The Custard Stand restaurants in Danville, Elkins and Oak Hill.

“We couldn’t be prouder as we watched The Custard Stand in Webster Springs become a bigger icon in the community,” says Angie Cowger. “Seeing the restaurant featured as part of our ‘Home’ segment on ‘Shark Tank’ and hosting our watch party there was a big thrill. It’s not in our plans to ever leave Webster Springs, but we do plan to continue to represent our home in the best ways possible.”

The Cowgers hope all five locations of The Custard Stand benefit from the 101 Unique Places to Dine honor.

“When you get your copy of the guide, our listing is easy to find,” said Dee Cowger. ‘We’re in the centerfold.’
