HAS students tour NRAO

GREEN BANK – Highland Adventist School students recently visited the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank to learn about radio astronomy. Students in grades pre-kindergarten to four stayed for the day to tour the radio telescopes, learn about the constellations in the inflatable star lab and completed a science scavenger hunt in NRAO’s science center.

In addition to those activities, the students in grades five to 12 became astronomers for a day. The students learned to use the 40-foot telescope and spent the night as “Astronomers for a Day,” searching for hydrogen in the Milky Way galaxy. Students worked in teams to map hydrogen clouds, participating in a scientific conference to report and evaluate their data before heading home the next day.

“This trip was an outstanding STEM learning experience,” stated Cheryl Jacko, principal. “Our students had a fabulous time and learned a lot about radio astronomy. We thank Ms. Heatherly and the NRAO staff for hosting us.”
