HOSA students head to Florida for conference

ELKINS — Twelve HOSA students from the Randolph Technical Center have qualified for the International Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, in June.

Students from the RTC traveled to Huntington with advisor Sallie Hamrick, guidance counselor Chis Thomas and principal John Daniels.

To qualify, the students placed first, second or third in their competitions at states. In the single competitions Alexis Volentir placed third in dental terminology; Kaitlyn Harris placed first in medical reading; Mataya Taylor placed first in transcultural health care; Sierra Poling placed first in sports medicine; Natalie Wolford placed first in extemporaneous writing; Chelsey Hammonds placed second in job seeking skills; Serena Wiseman placed first in speaking skills; and Morgan Talbot placed first in human growth and development.

Morgan Talbot also received an award for Outstanding State Officer and she won the Cathy Alexander Memorial Scholarship, worth $300. The two teams who qualified for internationals are Jacob Lewis and Ashton Hamrick, who competed in first aid and CPR, and Sydney Schumacher and Kaci Zopp, who competed in CERT skills.

The Randolph County Technical Center also won the first-place award for raising the most money in the state for the National Service Project, which is the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

HOSA students are having a raffle at HOFNOD in Elkins today and Sunday. Students will be raffling a gift card basket and kids basket at the event. They also are organizing a LulaRoe sale on April 8 at the Tech Center. If possible, donations are greatly appreciated to help support HOSA. Contact the HOSA advisor at 304-636-9195 for any questions or to make a donation. Competitions are a great opportunity for students to learn and prepare for success in the health care field.
