Social Studies fair slated for March 15

CLARKSBURG — The Hershel “Woody” Williams Armed Forces Reserve Center in Fairmont will be the site of the 2017 RESA 7 Regional Social Studies Fair, which is expected to draw upward of 150 students from 10 counties who will display entries in nine categories.

Participants will represent schools in Barbour, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, Monongalia, Preston, Randolph, Tucker and Taylor counties. The public is invited to attend the annual event, sponsored by the Regional Education Service Agency.

Suggested categories for entry include anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology, sociology, state and local studies, United States history and world history.

Projects will be classified by division, category and type. Students in grades three-five will participate in Division 1, grades six through eight will compete in Division 2 and nine through 12 will participate in Division 3

“Our intent is to recognize and reward students for their outstanding achievement. Social studies education must afford the student the opportunity to ask essential questions, recognize patterns of behavior, think critically, create solutions, predict outcomes and draw conclusions that will help them learn to solve problems. We believe this opportunity helps contribute to the overall educational experience,” said RESA 7 Executive Director Kathy Hypes.

Hypes said the objectives of the event are to provide opportunities for students to interpret the cultural, social, political, geographic and economic forces of historical and current issues and events so that they understand more fully the nature of social studies; and develop among participants the ability to apply the scientific method as it applies to social studies investigations.

Other objectives are to encourage students to demonstrate their knowledge and to observe what others throughout the state know regarding social studies content; encourage students to practice information and communication skills, thinking and problem-solving skills, interpersonal and self-directional skills; and provide a greater public appreciation of the abilities of youth.

Participants will begin the day by setting up projects from 8:30-10 a.m. Judging will be in progress from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. First- through third-place winners will receive their awards during a ceremony at 2:30 p.m.

First, second and third place winners in each division, category, individual, and group will receive special recognition and a ribbon during the event. First place winners also will earn a place in the West Virginia State Social Studies Fair scheduled April 15 at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston
