Students participate in event

Cam Martin and Charlie Preston represented the Randolph Technical Center’s Power & Energy class at the Elkins Middle School Career Fair on Wednesday. The class is instructed by Jeff Broschart.

ELKINS — Students from the Randolph Technical Center presented at the Elkins Middle School Career Fair on Wednesday.

The event was at the Phil Gainer Community Center and provided an opportunity for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades to meet with representatives from different businesses and agencies to learn about the educational requirements and skills needed for a particular career of their liking.

Students Cam Martin and Charlie Preston represented the Power & Energy class at the RTC, instructed by Jeff Broschart. The students brought a motor and a hydraulic lift, that they built themselves, to demonstrate to career fair participants.

Both students plan on continuing their education at West Virginia University and majoring in engineering. Martin plans to become a civil engineer, while Preston aspires to become a safety engineer.

Martin credits the Power & Energy class as being a, “great experience to see what all is involved with engineering.” Preston was unsure of his future career path before taking Power & Energy, but now affirms, “After designing projects throughout the year that incorporate different types of building, I am certain that this is what I want to do.”

Jacob Judy and Hali Newlon are enrolled completers in the Law and Public Safety class instructed by Michael Parlock at the Randolph Technical Center.

Also representing RTC were Jacob Judy and Hali Newlon. Judy and Newlon are enrolled completers in the Law and Public Safety class instructed by Michael Parlock. Judy plans on pursuing a career in law enforcement, while Newlon aspires to become an attorney or paralegal. The Law and Public Safety courses allow students to learn the fundamentals, ethics and legal applications necessary for a prominent career in law.

The courses at the RTC provide students with hands-on experience, skills and knowledge to not only enter the field with a leg up on other applicants, but it also gives students an opportunity to see firsthand if this is or is not the career for them.
