BUCKHANNON — A summer program for Upshur County students is well underway, offering everything from field trips and water rockets to community service projects.

The free program, called Summer Project ISAAC for Increasing Student Achievement, Advancing Communities, offers learning activities and snacks during the summer.

During the first two weeks, students had fun creating T-shirts, repainting the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School parking lot lines and numbers and building water rockets.

They also learned how to swing golf clubs step by step, and put critical thinking and math skills to the test by creating shopping lists.

To put the icing on the cake, the students were able to go to Hovatter’s Wildlife Zoo in Preston County. The students were ecstatic about feeding the animals, particularly the giraffes.

Students also have enjoyed a balanced, healthy breakfast and lunch each day, with food provided by Mountain CAP of WV Inc. Any individual under the age of 18 can have breakfast or lunch through the program, and anyone with questions can contact D.J. Stout, assistant coordinator for Summer Project ISAAC.

Joey Hochgesang is the Summer Project ISAAC coordinator, and April Spears is the food program coordinator for all the programs around Upshur County, and director of Mountain CAP.

Volunteers are welcome. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Charles Hayes, volunteer coordinator, by emailing charles.hayes@k12.wv.us.

Funding for this 21st Century Community Learning Center is provided wholly or in part by a grant from the United States Department of Education under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Title IV Part B, with grant administration carried out by the West Virginia Department of Education.
