PHILIPPI — For the first time in its almost 30-year history, the members of the Barbour County Chamber of Commerce nominated and elected the same member for two of its outstanding awards. Dr. Ann Serafin, executive director of Adaland, received both the 2016 Corporate Citizen of the Year Award while named the recipient of the 2016 Community Service Award. Both awards were presented by Chamber President Reg Trefethen during the Chamber’s annual banquet recently at Alderson Broaddus University.

“Adaland and its volunteer executive director have created a major economic engine in North Central West Virginia,” Trefethen said. “Last year Adaland had nearly 4,000 visitors, while the activities at the historic mansion provided spin-off business for area vendors. Many of the visitors frequented county businesses as well as our local historical museum. Adaland’s one full and six part-time employees were supplemented by 1,976 hours donated by 25 volunteers.”

“As the executive director,” Trefethen added. “Dr. Ann Serafin exemplifies the qualities and characteristics of outstanding community service and is an obvious choice for this award. She has also made countless contributions to the educational, cultural and aesthetic life of Barbour County, serving in both the public and private school systems. She has been the unpaid director since 1996 and has secured funds to improve and maintain structural enhancement, maintained period decor and created an atmosphere that attracts numerous visitors to the mansion. Adaland has become a valued stop along the trails passing through Barbour County.”
