Students participate in Upward Bound

ELKINS — More than 80 high school students from Randolph, Barbour, Tucker, Pendleton and Pocahontas counties participated in the Davis & Elkins College Upward Bound Classic Summer Program, June 4 through July 7.

During the session, students studied various subjects including composition and literature, math, science and technology, and participated in cultural and wellness classes on the D&E campus. The students also received rigorous preparation and resources for the ACT test.

The session concluded with an academic awards program honoring students who excelled in various classes. The awards were presented during a luncheon attended by the students’ families.

Recognized for outstanding academic performance were Academic All-Stars — Elisabeth Butcher, a student at Elkins High School, and Josey Faris, a student at Pocahontas County High School; composition and literature – Madison Myers, EHS; Katlyn Defibaugh, Tygarts Valley High School; Sonya Davis, TVHS; and Allyson Green, Philip Barbour High School; financial literacy and life skills — Ethan Edmond, PBHS; Taylor Tegtmeyer, Pocahontas County High School; Adriana Christopher, PBHS; and Brycon Gribble, Pendleton County High School; math, Gena Kelley, PBHS; Thomas Davis, Pendleton County High School; Mikala Starkey, PBHS; and Stephanie Amick, Pendleton County High School; physics — Haley Collins, EHS; Isaac Cleavenger, PBHS; Haley Mallow, PBHS; and McKenzie England, PBHS; technology, Gage Poling, PBHS; Cheyenne Kisamore, Pendleton County High School; Erin Hohl, EHS; and Courtney Dunbrack, Pocahontas County High School; German – Kasey Neville, PBHS; Jessica Nguyen, EHS; Adrienna Feury, Pocahontas County High School; and Seth Croston, PBHS; College 101, Rachel Bennett, EHS; and ACT prep, Nathan Gambrell, PBHS.

As a reward, the students traveled to New York City for cultural explorations.

The Upward Bound program, 100 percent funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is a federal TRiO program dedicated to assisting qualifying, first-generation Appalachian high school students in their transition from high school to college.
