Fiddle and banjo contest winners announced
ELKINS — Elkins City Park was alive with the sounds of traditional Appalachian music on Aug.12 as contestants took to the stage for the West Virginia Open Fiddle and Banjo Contest. With origins dating back to the 1930s, the contest was hosted as part of the 2017 Augusta Festival and previously took place in conjunction with the Mountain State Forest Festival and the Randolph County Fair.
Organizers say the celebration of the region’s traditional music was a tremendous success thanks to sponsors Smakula Fretted Instruments, The Delmonte Market & Market Creamery and Big Timber Brewing. Several generous anonymous donors lent their support as well.
“These sponsors are working together to keep the tradition going and we are very grateful for their support,” said Becky Hill, events coordinator for August Heritage Center.
The contest drew more than 30 participants from West Virginia as well as five other states. Cash prizes were awarded for first-, second- and third-place in fiddle and banjo. Best musicians in senior and youth age categories were also recognized.
Taking home prizes in the fiddle competition were Jesse Milnes of Valley Bend, first place; Andy Fitzgibbon of Montrose, second place; and Graham DeZarn of Winchester, Virginia, third place.
The banjo contest winners were Kevin Chesser of Elkins, first place; Andy Fitzgibbon of Montrose, second place; and Clarke Wyatt of Kansas City, Missouri, third place.
Gerry Milnes of Elkins took home the top senior participant prize, while Libby Hall of Pomeroy, Ohio, snagged the award for the highest scoring youth.
