Davis & Elkins leading services at churches

ELKINS — Davis & Elkins College President Chris A. Wood, the College Concert Choir and Tina Vial, assistant director of development support and coordinator of church relations, will lead worship and celebrate D&E Sunday at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church in Wheeling. The worship service begins at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John Oerter, transitional pastor, presiding.

The service is the first of several in which D&E will share its faith with West Virginia Presbyterian churches this fall. Additional services are set for Oct. 29 at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elkins and Nov. 12 at Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg.

A native of Huntington, Wood is D&E’s 15th president and an ordained United Methodist minister. Prior to coming to D&E in 2016, he served as vice president for advancement at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. During a 13-year period, he served several United Methodist pastorates in Illinois and Maryland, and later as the executive and program director of Mission West Virginia Inc. He will deliver the sermon titled “It’s a Wonder-Full Life.”

“I look forward to joining the Concert Choir to lead worship at Vance Memorial Presbyterian on Sunday,” Wood said. “As a Presbyterian college, Davis & Elkins affirms our connection to the Wheeling congregation. We also welcome Davis & Elkins alumni and friends in the Northern Panhandle to join us for the 10 a.m. service.”

This season, the choir adds to its repertoire a contemporary style of Christian music, presenting “Beautiful Day” by U2, “Even So Come” by Tomlin, Ingram and Cates, “We Believe” by Ryan, Hooper and Fike and “UnBroken Praise” by Redman, Myrin and Mauldi.

Under the direction of Liz Marshall-MacVean and accompanied by Donna Baroudi-Huffman, the choir is composed of sophomore Megan Augustine of Dallas, Georgia; senior Blake Boswell of Belpre, Ohio; freshman Abagael Cain of Elkins; senior Patrick Christ of Hydes, Maryland; freshman Daniel Condo of Massillon, Ohio; freshman Jennifer Digman of Elkins; senior Tiffany Dodd of Petersburg; freshman Madison Elliott of New Creek; freshman Robert Fields of Pecks Mill; senior Denise Folley of Charlottesville, Virginia; freshman Nathaniel Fornash of Huntington; senior Clay Friel of Hillsboro; freshman Georgia Gizzi of Lost Creek; sophomore Megan Huffnagel of Elkins; freshman Emilie Johns of Philippi; sophomore Madeline Lessner of Waldorf, Maryland; sophomore Lauren Lunemann of New Milton; senior Sheena McAllister of Inglewood, California; senior Shannen McClure of Marlinton; freshman Emma McDougal of Elkins; senior Stewart McGraw of Hinton; junior Jamey Perrine of Rock Cave; sophomore Hannah Shiflett of Beverly; senior MacKinzie Smith of Renick.; freshman Victoria Taylor of Elkins; senior Joshua Thompson of Parsons; senior Megan Walters of Charmco; freshman Emma Watson of Beverly; junior Matthew Weintraub of Lewisburg; and freshman Alexis Wood of Elkins.
