Emma Scott Garden Club, MSFF Announce Fall Yards of Month

Submitted photos As residents of Elkins and surrounding counties ‘Fall into Autumn Traditions,’ the 81st Mountain State Forest Festival and the Emma Scott Garden Club have canvased neighborhoods and awarded prizes for the fall Yards of the Month. Winners were presented with engraved wooden maple leaves and MSFF flags. The rambling ranch home of Sonja and Donnie Corbin at 114 Mountain View Drive is a fall spectacular. One will see an assortment of planters including a wooden cart complete with a scarecrow and his pet crow, mums in shades of red, a fall wreath and various-sized pumpkins and other scarecrows. Warm autumn shades of yellow, green, orange, red and purple abound here in other seasonal plantings. It is a lovely fall oasis everywhere one looks.
There is no place like home at Nayoka Guthrie’s house on 1219 S. Henry Ave. Her two-story dwelling and surrounding yards, both front and back, are an effused spirit of fall wonder. Multiple urns full of sunflowers and multicolored leaves flank the door and stairway. Her porch is replete with many mums, wreaths, flags, scarecrows and pumpkins. Soft leaf pillows and comforters make visitors want to just stay on that porch forever.
The home of Elsie Corica at 216 First St. is a fun, fall haven. Autumn leaf garlands adorn the porch railing. Rust and yellow potted mums lead the way onto the porch. Hanging planters of gold mums, scarecrows, grapevine wreaths, and festival flags complete the porch scene. The lighted candles in the windows add a warm, welcoming touch.
Pedestrians walking down Third Street might experience a double take. With creative festival spirit, Panhandle Support Services provides a fun autumn exhibit and therefore is the fall Business Yard of the Month. Outside cornstalks, leaves, scarecrows, and hay bales lead one to look inside, where an old woman bent over a harvest basket catches the eye. A cauldron, an antique corn sheller and even a live bunny are guarded by a large scarecrow. The creators and employees are Penny Skidmore, Amy Phillips, Kimberly Brenwalt, Keith Shannon and Traci Furby.
